Pit 34 on a wet Sunday afternoon!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADuring October we have been tidying up the site at Little Millhams as we shut down operations for the winter months. We have carried out some surveying work to confirm our site plan and to level in some of the recent excavations. On the weekend of 19/20 October, we excavated Pit 34 in a further attempt to locate the tailrace or exit channel from the mill structure. We were rained off on Sunday afternoon but we had excavated sufficiently to reveal sloping layers of sand and silt which may be indicative of a channel bank. Unfortunately there was no sign of revetment such as we had found north of the garden wall which would provide definite evidence of a structure defining the channel edge.
