A Start on Pit 36

ImageOn Sunday a small group of us started on another test pit, the first of the 2014.  This pit is to the east of the timber structure which we associate with the mill and in an area wher previous excavation had revealed large pieces of medieval pottery fairly close to the surface.  We hope that this may be an indication of the site of a dwelling nearby.  Initial results have revealed a shallow layer of limestone chips, some showing signs of having been elaborately carved and dressed.  We think that this may result from a dumping on site in relatively modern times of a quantity of rubble resulting from demolition or repairs of medieval structures in the town, perhaps the Priory.
